This is essentially a fictionalised version of Susan Tucker’s book, Telling Memories Among Southern Woman, which I’m pleased to see Stockett credits. I loved that book (non fiction) and have come back to it often over the years, but finished it feeling that I would have enjoyed more of the backdrop that went in to pulling it together. Of course Tucker wrote her book at a very different time – post Jim Crow. The Help is a bit of a ‘What if?’ Tucker had done that story two decades previously when the project was undoubtedly much riskier and if she wrote a bit more about how it felt to be putting it together. I enjoyed it and thought it was largely credible.
To address one point Stockett’s detractors bring up – I think she is telling a more sophisticated story than some of the readers who gave her low marks suggest. NY editor spots a naive girl looking for an opportunity. Spots her OWN opportunity to jump on the civil rights band wagon, safe in her office in Manhattan while others get their hands dirty. Who does everyone think REALLY told that television station the name of the town the book was set in? Did the editor care that the maids were at risk or that, as Minny and Aibileen tell her, Skeeter would end up with little choice but to get out of town if she wanted a life for herself? The ‘big job’ she ends up getting, thanks to her editor (maybe), is a copy write assistant’s position on a magazine. Aibileen, meanwhile, takes her job as Mrs Myers on the white newspaper. Everybody’s happy. That editor must be really pleased with herself and her best seller.

Neale Donald Walsch put into words and answered my concerns about the interpretation of the world’s sacred texts.
Walsch says the material in “Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue” was not written by him but happened to him. God did not stop talking to us 2,000 years ago He talks to anyone who will listen. This book is God’s latest word and if we are ready the Truth in these teachings will move, empower and change us.
How Walsch accessed the information matters not. What I treasure is the wisdom.
Examples of misguided teachings include: We cannot get to heaven by our actions. We are born in sin and will die in sin. There is only one way to heaven and it’s not through any undertaking of our own, but through the grace granted us by God and through the acceptance of His Son as our intermediary. Until we are “saved,” nothing we do, not the life we live, not the choices we make, not anything we undertake of our own will bears any influence because we are inherently unworthy. God created us this way and God’s Son has to save us.
Another misguided teaching is God’s conditional acceptance. We say God is love but if we break His commandments we will be punished by eternal banishment and damnation. We even created a mythology called the “devil.” We have forgotten what it is like to be loved without conditions.
In the spiritual world no one will judge us. There are no victims and villains for God does not judge His creation. Hell, the opposite of joy, is unfulfillment. It is knowing Who and What You Are and failing to experience that. The goal of the soul is to fully realize itself while in the body. We are born of God, we are pure love. Therefore bless every person and condition and give thanks. Affirm the perfection and show faith in God’s creation.
The fall of Adam and Eve was upliftment for without it relativity would not exist. Original sin, in truth, is First Blessing. No condition in the universe is “good” or “bad.” It just is.

Neale provides a fresh approach to how we can view God – and how God loves us unconditionally. This is a big change from what many believe today, because the prevailing thought about God is one who loves us but also who judges us. Unconditional love means without conditions – and this is a huge leap for one to take. If you are at least a little open to new thoughts, then this book may be for you.
This is the first of many books written by Neale and they have been translated into many different languages and millions have read his new theology. Neale has dedicated his life to helping those of us who desire to know and experience God in a more loving way. Kudos to Neale!

It took me a while to warm up to reading this book. I didn’t have high expectations, but decided to given in to the hype hoping I would be mildly entertained, it’s a teenage book how bad can it be? WOW! I am concerned for my teenage nieces now. There are so many bad messages being sent to teenager in this novel, I really think the writter should have taken her time to consider her target. First, Edward is NOT a teen, he may look like one, but he is over 100 years old!!! and should not be anywhere near teenage girls!!! That is NOT LOVE! and I don’t want teenage girls to think it’s acceptable in any form. Second, Bella- don’t know where to begin with this girl, the other reviews said it best, whinning, martyr, hormonal, irrational, etc. NO girl should have such an unhealthy fixation on a man, she is very selfish, she wants everything her way or she will do anything to get it regardless of what pain it may cause her family, Edward, Jacob whom she claims to love so much. I don’t think she is as much a doormat to Edward as Edward is to her. He gives in to her demands like the parent of a spoil brat. The writer’s attempt to give her enough guilt, concern for her parents and friends are so weak, just made her more annoying. Jacob, could have been a very good character, I could have rooted for him, but again, the writter made him into another selfish, manipulative bully. Jacob wants to force his kind of love on Bella, she loves him as a friend, but he is determined to have more, no matter how many times she tells him “no” to the point of kissing her against her will, forcefully, she hurt her hand trying to stop him (this part is really disturbing to me, it’s a symptom of a larger problem in real life)and her father’s reaction to it is very “boys locker room”. Jacob again gets to kiss her by emotionally black mailing her with the old “if you won’t be with me, I will let myself be killed”. I had “Jacob” type of friends in my life and is not romantic at all. The Artemis Fowl series is one of my favorites. It’s written in a way children and adults can enjoy, with creative plot twists and interesting, amusing characters. The book has plenty of humorous bits along with tense moments that will have you neglecting anything else so you can finish reading.

It baffles me to no end that anyone would give this book a five star rating or that it is considered a literary classic with a “powerful” theme. Not only is it intellectually barren, but is horribly written. Tedious and repetetive, it is literally the worst book I have ever encountered. It should be banned, not because of controversial language or subject matter, but so it cannot be inflicted on humanity any longer. It is truly a crime that this book is elevated to a position of equality with works like To Kill a Mockingbird.
