Is it even possible to have a conversation with God, in the same everyday sense that we can have a conversation with another person? Neale Donald Walsch doesn’t claim to have literally heard the voice of God, but he claims that God spoke to him nonetheless, and that he has simply transcribed God’s words.* I don’t think I’m the right person to take a position on Walsch’s claim but I will say that he offers a beautiful and compelling vision of reality and our creative power. His book inspires the excitement and the feeling of recognition that we experience when encountering a deep insight or truth. Readers might find passages in Conversations with God, attributed to God, that sound more like Walsch. But maybe those passages reflect Walsch’s limitations, or the reader’s limitations in understanding them.

In the book, we are told that God encompasses all things, including us. God created us – a part of Himself – so He could experience Himself. A thing can only be experienced in relation to what it is not, and we find both good and bad in the world. But we are urged not to condemn what we call bad in the world. Rather, when we encounter conditions that are inconsistent with what we are or what we want to be, we need to take responsibility for them and ultimately change them through our creative power.

The discussion of this – the creative power that we share with God – is the most compelling part of the book. We are told that the creative process begins with thought, becomes more concrete through speech, and more concrete still through action. When we recognize our power to create, we recognize that we are responsible for what exists. This is obviously true on one level: “things are what you make of them” is a commonplace. We have all seen people live up to our high expectations or be dragged down by low ones. I enjoyed this first book in a Harry Potter-sortof way. It’s good, fun escapism. What I like is how the tempo of the book changes from criminal drama to comedy to fantasy to spy novel, etc, etc… Initially, you aren’t really sure what is going on, but eventually the young anti-hero idea catches on and becomes a very entertaining narrative. Nathaniel Parker provides a fantastic narration, reminiscent of Jim Dale’s excellent characterization for the Potter audio books.
Having finished the first couple books, I’m led to think of the first two books almost as a continuous story, with many of the same characters recurring.
Worth checking out.

Love this (these) vacuums. I ordered two based on other shopper’s recommendation. I love them.

I bought this scale 3 months ago today, and it has been a major disappointment. At first it was OK, since I was using it once every two weeks and didn’t see a difference, but I now started using it daily since I started a weight loss program and it is very unreliable. I can’t keep it on the same spot every time, so I have to move it from one place to the other and when I do that I get different readings. If I get on the scale 3 times, I get 3 different readings, and they vary from 1 to 3 pounds. Unacceptable in my book. I kept trying to find a solution, but I have moved on to a new scale. I bought it yesterday, and I’m happy so far.
I bought this scale because of the ratings in Amazon, and that makes me wonder if those ratings are even real. I use Amazon very often, and trust them, but this scale will make me do some more research at time of buying.

A very charming novel by a bright author. I was worried about reading this because I can’t stand reading anything about animal abuse. But somehow Gruen writes so poignantly that I didn’t find myself cringing at the animal abuse as much as I did about the characters and the story. The ending isn’t as good of a redemption as I would have liked (you will find out what I’m talking about) but it’s good enough and such a pleasure all the way through. Especially if anyone has a Polish background it will be even more entertaining for you. I highly recommend this different book about old circuses, old folks and young, and those who like a romantic twist and of course, animals.
