"Shelter" kinetic fabric sculpture (BigBot)

I am currently building another robotic fabric sculpture, this one entitled “Shelter.” It is essentially two concentric rotating silk tents about 12 feet tall, with a space inside into which a viewer may go. The motors, sensors, and electronics are all at the top.

I have a page up with more details on the technical proposal, and a page with art documentation on the piece.

The image shown is from an early 1/2-scale test in my house using a ceiling fan and a hula hoop. I learned more in 30 minutes of experimenting with this model than from days of trying to imagine the motion or calculate it.

The piece will be installed in Pittsburgh in the Carnegie Library Main branch in Oakland, opening July 10, 2008.
